Please give a big hello to Natasha Galindo, an intern from Dona Ana Community College who is getting some experience this semester down here at the Mission.
Natasha is working on her degree in Public Health, is from Silver City and enjoys coaching T-Ball, volunteering at the Episcopal Church, and spending time with her family.
While here, she will be developing and implementing the early stages of a Time Bank.
For those who don’t know, a time bank is a way of giving and receiving to build supportive networks and strong communities.
One hour helping another earns one TimeBank Hour (also called time credits, service credits or time dollars.) TimeBanking builds on the magic of “pay it forward,” one good turn leading to another and another.
Here is how it works: I earn a time credit by doing something for you. It doesn’t matter what that “something” is.
You turnaround and earn a time credit doing something for someone else in your TimeBank Community.
For example, an hour of gardening equals an hour of child-care equals an hour of dentistry equals an hour of home repair equals an hour of teaching someone to play chess. The possibilities are endless.
Most of the hours people will work in exchange for their goods will be worked at the Mission in the beginning stages of the program, but may eventually spread to other establishments and homes in a true free-market exchange.
The program will soon be entirely online where anyone will be able to see the goods and services being offered and we will market it at least city wide in the near future.
