The 2015 Grant County 4-H Rodeo began Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and continues all day Sunday at Southwest Horsemen's Arena just east of Silver City.
A Saturday morning competition was calf breakaway. The lasso the rider tries to catch the calf with is attached with a string to the saddle. When the loop goes around the calf's neck, it doesn't jerk the calf, but when the rider's horse stops the rope breaks away and the calf runs off with it. The calf and the rider and horse leave the arena through the same gate, where the rope is removed from the calf and returned to the rider.
