ALCS has been visiting and helping at The Commons once a month. On January 27th, the 6-8th graders came to work in the garden, learn about the evolution of our food system, and make art with their bodies in our large open space! Kristin, our garden coordinator, guided them in harvesting carrots and prepping 3 beautiful garden beds so they will be ready for spring planting. Rita, our kitchen manager, taught students about indigenous food ways and the transition from hunting and gathering to farming. They made delicious atolé from blue corn, mesquite, seeds and nuts. Alison Philips, their art teacher, led an activity using their bodies to do charcoal prints. It was a wonderful day and we are so glad to have the opportunity to share The Commons with them.
