The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society will host Dr. Tom Phillips at their annual Membership Dinner on January 16 at the Silver City Woman's Club (1715 Silver Heights Blvd). Doors open at 6 Pm with dinner ($15) catered by the Silver City Woman's Club to be served at 6:30.
Trailing the Buffalo Soldiers for many years, Mr. Tom Phillips, an independent historian, has an undergraduate degree from the Art Institute of Chicago and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He is the co-author of "The Black Regulars. 1866 - 1898" which is a study of the first generation of African Americans to serve as regulars in the United States Army. His research in how these soldiers were depicted in period art and illustrations, brought him to the painter Frederic Remington and his paintings of the Buffalo Soldiers. "Much of what the public learned about the service of these black regulars came from the art and writing of Remington."
While in the southwest Phillips will be traveling to Fort Davis near Alpine, Texas. There he will continue his research on the story of Henry O. Flipper, who was the first African American graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1877.
The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society invites the public to join our volunteer Army to protect, restore, and preserve the story of the heritage of Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark for today's visitors and future generations. Membership dues ($15 - individual & $25 for a family) or contributions are tax exempt.
