Violence Has No Legitimate Part in Any Relationship
A panel and the public will air "Many Voices against Relationship Violence" in a free forum in Western New Mexico University's J. Cloyd Miller Library, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, October 15, according to Magdaleno Manzanarez, forum program director.
Tanya Rivers, WNMU professor, will moderate the panel. Sponsors of the forum – Miller Library, MEChA (the Mexican American student organization), El Refugio (a shelter and program for victims of domestic abuse), the WNMU Center for Gender Equality and the Grant County Democratic Party – invite the audience to consider together with the panel the effects of relationship violence on individuals and social institutions.
Panelists will be Silvia Madrid, director of Domestic Violence Offender Treatment Intervention for El Refugio; Kelli Sierras, executive director of Sexual Assault Support Services; and Jonathan Leggett, psychologist, Hidalgo Medical Services.
"Some experts talk about the ripple effect of relationship violence on our societal well-being, our children, our economy. I think this forum will make clear that relationship violence is a tsunami, a tidal wave that can sweep away lives," says Mazanarez, a WNMU vice president and political science professor.
The public is invited to the discussion, one of a free series covering public issues, held in the J. Cloyd Miller Library. A light meal is offered following the program.
